Jura Impressa A9 Review – A Flash In The Coffee Cup Or A Viable Long-Term Option?

by | Jul 29, 2019

There’s no doubt that when it comes to automatic coffee makers, Swiss manufacturer Jura is a serious player. While they’re especially popular in Europe, their market share is pretty substantial in the rest of the world too. They produce substantial, sturdy machines for serious coffee drinkers – and we aren’t the only ones who were pretty impressed with the A9 model, as several Jura Impressa A9 reviews reveal.

The Jura Impressa A9 is an unassuming piece of kit, with a decent build quality, an understated elegance, and a lot of aluminum. It’s a one-touch automatic espresso machine, not the smallest or cheapest on the market, but a reliable coffee maker with a decent choice of beverages.

In terms of its position in the market, it fits in between models like the Jura F7 or the Jura F8, and the Jura ENA range. The front panel is smart “piano black”, side panels are aluminum, and the selection panel is on the top.

Jura Impressa A9 Review

While the Jura Impressa A9 is an automatic bean-to-cup machine, it does also have the option for you to use pre-ground coffee (although we’re pretty sure we’re not the only folks who enjoy the aroma of freshly ground coffee almost as much as the taste).

If you’re wondering how much room you need for this machine, allow enough space to accommodate a device 9.4 inches wide by 17.5 inches deep by 12.7 inches high. It weighs 29.2 pounds (30 pounds with shipping). Bear in mind that the selection screen is on the top of this coffee maker, so you do need to allow enough space to see that too.

  • 12 Coffee Specialities - Including Latte Macchiato Doppio & Cappuccino Doppio | Height-adjustable dual spout w/ fine foam technology
  • High-performance 15-bar pump | Hot Water Function
  • Built-in Aroma+ Grinder | Thermoblock Heating System
  • 8 programmable coffee strength levels | Integrated milk system cleaning program
  • Self-explanatory touchscreen display

While the machine is easy enough to clean and has a particularly nice “auto clean” function for the milky bits, you can’t remove the brew unit, so you will need to run a cleansing tablet through the system regularly, ideally weekly. The dual spout is height adjustable to accommodate a range of cup sizes. The machine uses the Thermoblock heating system, so water is heated up by being passed over an element.

You will need to buy the milk canister and connection separately.

Sustainability and power consumption are on everyone’s minds these days, and the Jura Impressa A9 does put itself into power saving mode after 5 minutes, turning itself off completely if it hasn’t been used for two hours.

There are a couple of surprising downsides to the Jura A9, including the really quite small water reservoir, just 37 ounces, and the small capacity of the bean container, just 4 ounces. Given that you can brew two cups at once, these capacities seem pretty stingy.

Benefits Of The Jura A9 Coffee Center

Italy has had a huge influence on our coffee drinking habits, even extending to the actual names of the beverages we drink. You get four main choices with this machine: cappuccino, espresso, latte macchiato, and coffee, with 12 variations on a theme in total including cappuccino doppio, latte macchiato doppio, and ristretto. You can also choose to have two servings of espresso or ristretto dispensed at the same time.

It’s generally agreed that if you want a decent espresso, you need at least 9 bars of pressure in your coffee machine; the A9 has an impressive 15. The A9 has an auto frother rather than a frothing wand, making this machine a good choice for those who might be a little intimidated by the mere idea of using a wand.

We found the milk steam pretty good, and the milk froth delightfully foamy and light, although there was a little good-natured disagreement about whether the temperature was hot enough. Although this machine produces very consistent, great-tasting espresso coffee, one or two purists might find the fine grind time is a little too rapid to get the consistency quite as fine as they’d like for their ideal shot of espresso.

The Jura Impressa Pros & Cons

What we really like

Sturdy, understated design from a market leader

15 bar pump – high performance

Very consistent espresso quality

Choice of 8 different drink strengths

You can make 2 coffees at a time

Milk froth is deliciously foamy

Hot water function

What we don't like

✗ You can’t change the brewing temperature – milky drinks especially are on the cool side

✗ No auto-start; no choice of auto shutoff time

✗ Brew unit not removable; you’ll need to run a cleansing tablet through regularly (like, weekly)

Overall, owners liked the machine, with a few niggles; as the saying goes, you can please some of the coffee drinkers all the time, and all of the coffee drinkers some of the time, but pleasing all of the coffee drinkers all of the time? That’s not really a possibility.

People liked the frothing feature on the Jura Impressa A9, and most were happy with the overall taste and texture of the espresso. This coffee maker scores highly when it comes to ease of use, choice of beverages including the strengths available, and its very modern “look”, compatible with just about any kitchen décor you can think of.

Jura A9 – What Are My Other Options?

If you’re in the market for an automatic coffee machine, but you’re not quite sure that the Jura Impressa A9 is the right coffee maker for your needs, you have a few other choices.

DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica

One option is the ESAM3300 Magnifica from DeLonghi, which usually retails for considerably less than the Jura Impressa A9.

  • Note: 1)Too coarse a grind, too little coffee, or insufficiently tamping the grounds before brewing can all lead to inadequate pressure for a proper brew. 2)It is important to note that the amount of...
  • FRESH ESPRESSO FOR EVERY CUP: The professional burr grinder with 13 adjustable settings grinds fresh beans every time to ensure maximum freshness. You can also use pre-ground in the second chamber....
  • YOUR FOAM, YOUR WAY: A manual frother mixes steam and milk to create a rich, creamy froth for evenly textured drinks – just the way you like them.
  • CONSISTENT BREWING EVERY TIME: Each cup is automatically brewed to the perfect temperature, richness and density. And you can customize the settings to ensure its always just the way you like it.
  • EASY TO CLEAN AND HANDLE: The compact, extractable brew unit is not only easy to clean, it self-adjusts for one or two shots of espresso.

You still get the rich creamy froth – DeLonghi’s “Cappuccino System” technology is patented, and another endearing feature is that you can keep your coffee cups warm.

You can get just under 8 pounds of beans in the container, and DeLonghi machines generally require around half the cleaning time of other brands. The size of the coffee maker is 17 by 13 by 18 inches, and the water capacity is 60 ounces.

Alternatively, you can check out the Philips Saeco HD8927/37, which is generally a little pricier than the Jura Impressa A9. With this machine, you get a choice of 11 coffee varieties, 5 aroma strengths, and 10 grinder settings. The grinder is completely ceramic.

The machine is made from stainless steel, and if you use the Aqua Clean filter, you can make an average of 5,000 cups of coffee before you even need to think about descaling. The water reservoir capacity is in the region of 60 fluid ounces. It’s a surprisingly light machine, at just under 16 pounds after shipping, and you’ll need 19.5 x 11 x 18 inches of space to accommodate this item.

We’re sticking with Philips and Saeco for our third alternative option to the Jura Impressa A9. The Saeco Incanto with AquaClean filter, Stainless Steel, HD8917/48 retails for around the same price as the Jura A9 Coffee Center; the disc grinder is 100% ceramic; the milk carafe is detachable as is the brewing unit, and the cleaning and descaling are automated.

No products found.

The finish is stainless steel, and like the PicoBaristo, this machine is good for 5,000 cups before it needs to be descaled as long as you use the Aqua Clean filter system. Weight-wise, it’s just under 22 pounds and the water capacity is just over 56 fluid ounces. It’s 9 inches wide by 13 inches high by 17 inches deep. There’s no cup warming feature on this machine though.

Alternatively, the other Jura models are comparable to the Jura Impressa A9. Specifically the Jura J80, the Jura Micro 9 and the Jura C9 machine.

Would We Recommend The Jura Impressa A9?

While it’s not the cheapest model out there, or the smallest, and there are a couple of quirks in the design, the Jura Impressa A9 is a smart, practical, contemporary automatic espresso coffee maker that anyone would be proud and pleased to have as part of their kitchen setup.

Due to the relatively small water tank capacity, we probably wouldn’t suggest this for anything more than a one or two-person workplace setting, but it’s ideal for domestic use. With its great range of drinks, including the “doppio” options (literally “double”), and its super user-friendly screen interface, it’s a great first automatic coffee machine for a serious coffee drinker.
