Good Things In Small Packages: We Review A Dozen Of The Best Peaberry Coffees

by | Nov 4, 2019

If you’re a coffee connoisseur, you’re very likely to have come across peaberry coffee on your travels. If this is a new type of coffee to you, dive in – we’re pretty sure you’ll very soon be converted. It’s a variety of coffee that’s shown up on most people’s radar fairly recently, although it has been around for some time.

Peaberry coffee is not the cheapest coffee option out there: it is something most people are likely to try for the first time on a special occasion, or if it’s gifted to them. There are blends of peaberry coffee, however, to suit pretty much all pockets, and it’s worth paying a little extra for something as special as this. So come with us on our quest to find the best peaberry coffee. And remember, the most expensive option won’t always be the one that’s best for you.

At A Glance: Our Top 5 Peaberry Coffees

We investigated a dozen of the most delicious options out there. Many peaberry coffees come from Tanzania, but Kona peaberry coffee, produced in Hawaii, is an excellent alternative.

If you’re wondering which one was our favorite, and why, we won’t keep you in suspense any longer – it’s the first one on our list, the Tanzania Peaberry Coffee from Good As Gold Coffee Roasters. This is our five-star choice, although we enjoyed trying them all.

Which Peaberry Coffee Is The Best?

Our Winner: Tanzania Peaberry Coffee (5/5)

We loved the scent, we loved the texture, but most of all we loved the rich, creamy taste of this coffee, reminiscent of butter. The beans are small-batch roasted in the company’s custom-built air roaster, giving them a delicate, elegant finish.

You can feel reassured that there will be no burnt aftertaste with these coffee beans. This is a strong, robust blend. There is a hint of acidity, but this produces especially delicious lattes and has pretty much already become one of our favorite “every day” coffees.

It’s always nice to know a little about who’s producing your coffee, and this company is family-run, with over forty years of experience behind them. The beans for the Tanzania Peaberry Coffee  from Good As Gold are specially selected from farms around the world where the growers work to use sustainable farming practices.

Costa Rica Peaberry Coffee (by Volcanica)

The single-origin 100% Arabica coffee is grown on the La Isabela Estate in the Tres Rios region in Costa Rica, near the Pacific coast. The coffee is shade-grown at about 5,200 feet, and rainforest certified. The beans are packed immediately after they have been roasted and every bag carried the date of roasting.

The flavor of this Volcanica Costa Rica Peaberry Coffee  is intense and balanced, with a good blend of fruit and citrus notes. You’ll get the best results with this blend if you grind your beans daily, ideally with a burr grinder. This coffee is dark enough to make a decent espresso.

Tanzanian Peaberry (Whole Bean Coffee)

The medium roast Tanzanian Peaberry coffee  has a robust, rich flavor, with hints of chocolate and oats in the mix as well as fruit. It’s low in acidity and ideal for use in a percolator, French press or drip coffeemaker. We’re pretty sure it would probably also work well in reusable coffee pods.

The beans are not oily and this blend makes a very good espresso, with decent crema, and an excellent cappuccino. Although it may look a little dark, it grinds to a very pleasant medium roast.

Kauai Coffee Peaberry

The 100% Hawaiian Kauai Peaberry coffee  is from the Koala Estate on the island of Kauai. The coffee beans are sorted by hand, with the best selected for small-batch roasting. This is a smooth, round-tasting roast, with a hint of spice, towards the dark end of the medium-dark coffee spectrum. It has made a very good espresso.

For a robust, pleasant-tasting cup of coffee, use 1 tablespoon of peaberry coffee to every 14 ounces of water, and a brewing temperature of around 180 degrees Fahrenheit for about 4 minutes, according to taste. The first couple of sips might strike you as a little on the acidic side, but stick with it – the taste soon evens out into a lovely round flavor.

This is a robust-tasting blend with a strong note of cherry and a hint of hazelnut, and the round shape of the beans adds to the rich flavor. There is a tiny hint of acidity but not enough to make the brew taste bitter. It works particularly well for a cold brew and is an extremely good value for money.

Paradise Mountain (Rare Thailand Peaberry)

Paradise Mountain Rare Thailand Peaberry coffee  is grown in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and has notes of chocolate and citrus, particularly orange. The body is rich, and the taste is smooth and balanced. The acidity is very low, and the taste is similar to Jamaican Blue Mountain.

This organic coffee is USDA certified and is a highly popular medium roast. Thai peaberries tend to produce a smoother-tasting coffee than is typical of the Hawaiian peaberries, and this coffee is no exception. The aroma of this coffee is also quite delicious, and we found it makes a decent espresso, although there was relatively little crema.

What Is Peaberry Coffee And Where Does It Come From?

Now is probably a good time to explain what peaberry coffee is, and why it’s so special, since the more you know about the type of coffee, the easier it will be to choose one that’s right for you.  Let’s start with a quick coffee anatomy lesson.

Usually, the fruit, or cherry, of the coffee plant develops two seeds, with flattened sides facing one another. In around 5% of coffee beans, however, only one seed develops. This is the peaberry. Peaberry coffee beans are selected very carefully, and will usually be air-roasted to maintain flavor and preserve the delicate nature of the fruit.

In general, the Hawaiian peaberry is slightly more acidic than the Thai peaberry; the Tanzanian peaberry, although very small, is packed with flavor. Peaberry coffee is most often associated with Tanzania, although peaberry coffee varieties from Hawaii and Thailand have also become popular in recent years. There is a debate about whether peaberry is always superior to “ordinary” coffee: so much depends on the estate, roasting process and climate.

What Is The Best Way To Make Peaberry Coffee?

Peaberry blends tend to be light to medium roast, so many blends are not ideal for espresso, although there are exceptions. They are, however, perfect for making rich-tasting coffee with a great combination of flavors in drip coffee machines, automatic coffee machines, and with a French press

Peaberry coffee, in general, is known for its light, bright, rounded taste and smooth texture, although as with all coffee varieties, it differs between producers. There’s a real pleasure to be had in the scents of peaberry coffee, which can range from deepest darkest chocolate to light and fruity lime or orange.

What Makes Peaberry Coffee So Special?

With peaberry coffee, you know that you’re getting something that little bit special. The price does reflect this, but there is no doubt that the flavors of peaberry coffee really are worth paying for. There is a theory that peaberry coffee is so good because the coffee cherries, being round, roast more evenly. It’s equally likely that the unique taste is due to the fact that the beans are specially selected.

There’s even a charm about the word: peaberry, especially when you know that the Spanish word for these coffee beans is caracolillo, derived from the word for snail. So it’s no wonder that peaberry coffee is becoming quite a trend in many coffee outlets.

One of the key features that makes peaberry coffee so special is that the beans are sorted by hand, allowing sorters to keep only the very best to be added to the blend. While we’re sure robot coffee harvesters will probably appear on the horizon at some point given some of the research going on in the world, when it comes to coffee, as yet, there’s no substitute for experience and expertise and for what might be termed “human eyeball 1.0”.

And The Best Peaberry Coffee Is…

Our Winner: Tanzania Peaberry Coffee (5/5)

We announced our clear winner earlier on, but we’d just like to repeat it. Overall, of the twelve we tried, our favorite peaberry coffee variety is, without a doubt, the Tanzania Peaberry Coffee  from Good As Gold Coffee Roasters.

We love the company ethos, we love the care and attention, and we love the fact that this company is constantly learning – and it shows in the end product. It’s mellow and delicious and makes coffee drinking even more of a pleasure. We love the look, we love the smell, and most of all, we love the taste.
