by | Jan 2, 2020

Ah, luxurious lattes. Smooth and silky, frothy and decadent – it’s like the grown-up big brother to a cappuccino. And with lattes, it’s all about the texture of the foam. The milkier and more velvety the better.

Although the quality of the espresso produced remains vital, choosing a latte machine for home is a little different from selecting a coffee maker that’s primarily going to create espresso coffees. So come and compare the 5 best latte machines we could find in our round-up.

What Is The Best Latte Maker?

Our Winner: Mr. Coffee Latte Maker

Though you’re looking for a latte machine, and generally people linger over lattes, we understand you sometimes just need a quick answer. So if you’re wondering which we thought was the best latte machine of these 5, we’ll put you out of your misery right now.

So, cutting to the chase, let us proudly introduce No products found. With 19 bars of pressure in the pump, you get the absolute best coffee taste. That’s before you take into account the super-easy one-touch button. And from a pure latte perspective, there’s an automatic milk frother and the milk reservoir is easy to fill, clean, and store.

Keurig K-Cafe C

So how does No products found. measure up? Pretty well, all things considered. You can use any Keurig K-cup pod with this machine to whip up a latte, create a cappuccino, or just brew a coffee. You can even decide how strong you’d like your beverage to be. Just select the Strong Brew option.

The frother is dishwasher-safe, and it isn’t only dairy milk you can use. This latte machine copes equally well with almond, skim, and soy milk. If you use the coffee shot, you’ll get just what it says on the tin, as it were: a concentrated shot of everyone’s favorite caffeinated drink.

You can then use your choice of milk to froth up a cappuccino or whisk up a luscious latte. If you’re in the mood for an iced latte, you can choose the cold setting. And you get a choice of brew sizes too: 6, 8, 10, or 12-ounce servings.

The Keurig K-Café weighs just 15 pounds once the shipping is removed, and measures 15.3 x 12.5 x 11.7 inches. So it’ll fit snugly into even the smallest of kitchen corners. To get you off to a great start this machine typically ships with 36 K-cups. You get 12 each of Caribou, Newman’s Own Organics, and Green Mountain Roasters Columbia Select. Plus, the Keurig brand is well known for its exceptional quality.

Pros & Cons

What we really like

The frother is dishwasher safe

You can adjust the strength of your coffee

Ships with a starter pack of 36 K-Cups

That nickel finish looks great in any kitchen

You can choose either iced or steamed milk

What we don't like

✗ You can only use Keurig K-Cups with this machine

✗ It isn’t possible to adjust the temperature

Mr Coffee Latte Maker

Okay, so No products found. coffee maker was our overall top pick, especially in terms of being the best value of the coffee machines we investigated. It’s marketed as an espresso maker and a cappuccino machine. It also just happens to make really fabulous lattes.

There’s a 19 bar pressure pump, so get every last mite of flavor out of your coffee. And you don’t have to guess when it comes to making your espresso. The one-button press is super-simple, allowing you to choose either a single shot or a double shot of espresso.

We loved the heating system – the thermocouple mechanism heats the water really evenly so your drinks are absolutely piping hot. And then there’s the automatic milk frother. Any milk can be whipped into a foamy froth with a lightness that’s likely to make you think of clouds. Or at least marshmallows.

The milk reservoir is removable, so it’s easy to fill, simple to clean, and allows you to store any leftover milk in the fridge, minimizing waste. And we’re not kidding when we say any milk works well – dairy, 2%, skim, half-and-half, soy, almond, cashew…

You can use a tall travel mug, up to 5.25 inches high, or a short cup of coffee easily as this machine has adjustable height options. Oh, and if you’re worried about the cleaning and maintenance, don’t be. Just another single push of a button sets the cleaning cycle in motion.

If you’re keen to know the technical specifications, the milk reservoir has a capacity of 22 fluid ounces. The machine weighs 15.21 pounds and measures 10.9 x 13.7 x 15.5 inches. The drip tray is made of stainless steel.

Pros & Cons

What we really like

The thermocouple heater means your water is warmed evenly to a piping hot temperature

Range of drinks at a single push of a button

Super-easy to use to produce single or double shots of espresso, cappuccino, or latte

19-bar pressure Italian pump

Ultra-easy cleaning cycle – you guessed it, it’s just another press of a button

Will froth up all types of milk very successfully

What we don't like

✗ You must follow the instructions in the manual to prime the unit before first use

✗ You will need to remove the drip tray and cover if you want to use a taller travel mug for your coffee

Breville The Barista Express Espresso Machine

For our third choice, we thought we’d take a look at a Breville machine in detail – the BES870XL.  Yes, we know, that sounds a little like one of those droids you might encounter in one of the Star Wars movies. This model does have a friendlier name too – it’s also sometimes called the Barista Express Espresso Machine.

This latte machine is mid-priced but still incorporates a conical burr grinder. You can grind just the amount of coffee you want on demand. We also liked the fact that you dial in the grind size you want. And if you change your mind, there’s a manual over-ride.

Breville Barista Express Espresso Machine, Brushed Stainless Steel, BES870XL
  • Please refer to user guide or user manual or user guide (provided below in PDF) before first use

It copes happily with any type of roast coffee bean, and you get the optimal extraction on your espresso, due in part to the PID, or the digital temperature control. It takes less than a minute from grind to espresso.

We have to confess to being ever so slightly partial to a little latte art – although our creations probably won’t be gracing an art gallery near you any time soon. So we especially liked the fact that you can texture the microfoam really well with this machine. For that reason (and others) this was our choice for the top performer.

We also liked the design of the grinding cradle: it means that you can grind directly into the espresso portafilter, so there’s less mess. Oh, and did we mention it’s hands-free? You can set this machine for single or double shots.

This machine ships with a good range of accessories, including a 54mm stainless steel portafilter; two single and dual wall filter baskets; a scoop so you can measure your coffee out perfectly; a tamper (integrated); a milk jug (stainless steel); cleaning tablets, disc, brush, tool and Allen key; and a water filter and holder.

If you’d like to measure in advance to make sure it’ll fit into that vacant space on the kitchen counter, this latte maker is 13.25 x 12.5 x 15.75 inches. It was the heaviest of the latte coffee makers (or coffe makers as some might say), weighing in at 23 pounds (26.5 with shipping). While a lot of this machine is made of metal, there is also a relatively high percentage of plastic.

Pros & Cons

What we really like

You can choose exactly the grind you want via the dial

Manual over-ride

The hands-free grinding cradle means the ground beans go directly into the espresso portafilter

Interchangeable filters

Excellent range of accessories

What we don't like

✗ You do need to read the instructions before you start using this machine

✗ The coffee grounds do build up pretty quickly with this machine so have a container on hand to dispose of the pucks

✗ When you’re making espresso keep an eye on the pressure gauge throughout

Klarstein Passionata Rossa

For our next choice, which was our favorite budget option, we selected No products found. This comes in stainless steel, with accents of on-trend red, and really adds a splash of color to your kitchen.

We loved the steam nozzle, which makes frothing up milk and making hot drinks super quick and easy. It’s also really simple to adjust. You get 15 bars of pressure, and we were delighted at how easy it was to clean this machine after use. The mesh drip tray is made of stainless steel and it typically ships with a plastic tamper.

The water tank is removable and holds around 12 fluid ounces or enough fluid for 6 cups of coffee. The heating system is thermo-block based. The stainless steel water pipe also means you can be sure there will be no corrosion, or aftertaste in the water.

You can brew an espresso pretty quickly, in around 30 to 45 seconds. The double basket will hold around 17 grams of coffee, and to avoid too much foam on the espresso make sure the tamp is full and pressed down well.

This is a fast, quiet machine but you do need to be aware that there is no auto shut-off so you do need to keep an eye on it while brewing your lattes. You will also get the best results if you wipe the water head once you’ve used the machine.

The foamer is great but it doesn’t extend very far from the machine. You might want to bear that in mind when you’re choosing your drinking vessel!

Pros & Cons

What we really like

Compact size

Great red accents add a splash of color and interest to any kitchen

Quiet and fast in operation

Produces consistently frothy, foamy milk

Gives you a lot of manual control over your results

Very keenly priced and excellent value for money

What we don't like

✗ The supplied tamper is plastic

✗ No auto-shut-off

✗ It takes a little while to get the balance of coffee and water just right

Nespresso Latissima Plus

Then, last but not least, we took a long look at No products found. This Nespresso original capsule system machine is also known as the EN520SL. (Yes, yet another coffee machine that wouldn’t be out of place alongside our little robot friends from one of the most successful science fiction movie franchises ever.)

The espresso extraction system, patented by manufacturer De’Longhi, uses 19 bars of pressure to make sure you get a perfect drink on every occasion. There are two coffee options and three milk choices, and this is another machine that allows you to select your drink with just one touch of a button.

The hot milk system is very easy to clean, and the fact that the drip tray slides means you can easily make a larger or a smaller drink depending on your taste. Cappuccino, latte, and macchiato are three of the specialty options.

The heating system uses thermoblock technology so those cold liquids begin heating in seconds. The temperature stays at the optimal level to produce single-serve coffee drinks pretty much instantaneously. It reaches the perfect temperature for coffee in around 40 seconds.

You’ll get the best results with your milk froth with skimmed or semi-skimmed milk at a temperature of about 4 degrees Celsius. The water container has a capacity of 30 fluid ounces, and there is an energy-saving auto-off timer that can be adjusted.

The milk container is removable, so you can easily store any left-over milk in the fridge. And best of all, the milk dispenser is really easy to use. We did also find, however, that you get a little fluid collecting in the used capsule container, so you probably will want to make sure you stay on top of emptying it regularly.

Personalization is one of the best features of all Nespresso models. Every drink can be programmed and personalized by adjusting the quantities of coffee and milk/froth. You can even set this machine for soft, medium, or hard, depending on the hardness of your water, so you needn’t worry about missing a descaling cycle.

There’s an auto-off timer that kicks in after just 9 minutes of inactivity, although you can adjust this for up to 8 hours. These machines typically ship with a welcome pack of 16 capsules so you can quickly find your favorite, and the aluminum capsules are now recyclable in most places.

This good-looking, modern machine measures 12.5 x 6.6 x 10.2 inches and was our lightest selection. It weighs just 9 pounds once the 2.64 pounds of shipping materials are removed. It’s mainly made from plastic, so is very durable.

Pros & Cons

What we really like

Adjustable auto-off timer

Very intuitive – just a touch of a button produces great drinks

Velvety milk froth with a lovey silky mouth-feel to it

All drinks can be programmed and personalized

What we don't like

✗ The coffee does flow relatively slowly

✗ You do need to keep on top of the descaling for this machine, especially if you live in a hard water area

✗ It’s important to press the clean button on the milk frother very firmly to make sure it registers

Picking The Right Espresso Latte Machines – Our Buying Guide

Great latte, like Americanos, cappuccinos, cortados, and macchiatos, starts with a great espresso. So when you’re looking for a coffee machine that will produce great lattes, you also need to make sure it produces great espresso.

You also need to make sure it’s within the price range that suits you and that it’s going to fit in with your kitchen. And since it’s latte machines we’re in the market for, you need to think about how your milk is going to be heated and frothed. As well as whether you need to make sure it’s not just dairy milk that will work.

Factors To Consider When Buying A Latte Coffee Maker

So what should you look for, as you navigate the maze of latte coffee makers? Is it important that you have a latte machine where all you need to do is pop in a pod, capsule, or pre-ground coffee and just press a button? Or would you rather have more control over the grind of your coffee? And how important is brewing speed?

Do you need a coffee maker with an integral grinder, or would you rather use separate devices? Do you already have a raft of accessories like coffee scoops and tamping equipment, or are you starting from scratch? Do you need a basic budget machine, one that’s easy to clean, and how important is warranty and after-sales tech support?

What Are the Advantages Of Latte Coffee Makers?

One major advantage of having your own latte machine is having barista-quality coffee on tap. There’s also the fact that you can often adjust the strength and temperature of your coffee.

While it’s not the only consideration, cost can also be a factor. Even allowing for maintenance and the time you’ll spend cleaning your new coffee kit, having your own latte machine will probably be more economical than the local coffee shop. There’s also the fact that you can really customize your lattes.

How Do You Make A Great Cup Of Latte?

We know it might sound like something of a contradiction in terms, but to make a great drink with your latte coffee maker, get your latte glasses ready. Start, as always, with a shot of great espresso. Assemble your cocoa powder, cinnamon sprinkles, mini-marshmallows, flavored syrups and anything else you feel like adding.

Prepare your cold milk for steaming: the higher the fat content, usually, the better the froth. Heat your milk using a wand or your built-in latte machine features. Top your espresso with steamed milk, add a little froth to finish, and if you’re trying your hand at coffee art, get your stencils and your chocolate powder ready. Position the stencil, get the cocoa powder ready, sprinkle, and enjoy.

Do All Espresso Machines Make Lattes?

Okay, so we know that most coffee machines make espresso of some description. After all, it’s the base for pretty much every coffee out there. So even the single-serve machines will have a close alternative, like a cortado or an Americano.

All espresso machines do not, however, make lattes, although all of those in our review have that option. Not all espresso machines have built-in options for milk steaming, frothing and foaming. Should you fall madly in love with an espresso machine, however, it is possible to buy a separate steaming wand.

What’s The Difference Between A Latte And A Cappuccino?

Okay, so both a cappuccino and a latte are milk-based frothy coffee drinks. Both use espresso shots as the base, and both have steamed milk added. The difference is in the proportion of milk to coffee, and the way the milk is prepared.

The main difference between a cappuccino and a latte is that a latte, at least an American one, is a single shot of espresso topped with around six fluid ounces of steamed milk. It’s then topped off with a little froth and, often, a little latte art.

Meanwhile, a cappuccino also starts with a shot of espresso but has more foam than a latte. A lot more foam. Some schools of thought believe that a great cappuccino is a third coffee, a third hot water, and a third foam. It takes a lot of skill and effort to create effective foam. You can still do the coffee art thing though.

Conclusion: Which Latte Machine Should You Buy?

Our Winner: Mr. Coffee Latte Maker

So now that you’ve finally decided to take the plunge and indulge in your very own latte machine, we hope we’ve helped you narrow down your choice. Our favorite of these 5 options remains No products found.

We love the one-button operation. The 19 bars of pressure extract great flavor from your coffee beans. And then there’s the frother. It’s decent value for money too.

Given that we were looking at espresso latte machines, this coffee maker is right on the money. So all you need to do now is get out the latte glasses, whip up a froth, and enjoy.
