Is This The Black Gold? Our Overview Of Puerto Rican Alto Grande Coffee

by | Jan 17, 2020

In an ideal world, we’d all buy coffee beans and grind them fresh ourselves every time we fancied a cup of coffee. Only, it isn’t always possible to find the time or the equipment to do that, especially if we’re in a hurry. And that’s where pre-ground Puerto Rican coffees like Alto Grande  come into their own.

And while Colombian, French, Italian and Ethiopian blends are just some of the gorgeous coffee types out there, sometimes it’s good to have a slightly different blend of flavors. If you’d like to try a robust yet mellow coffee with hints of chocolate, Puerto Rican coffee will suit you down to the ground.

Alto Grande Coffee From Puerto Rico

Alto Grande Coffee Puerto Rico  is known for its robust flavor, low acidity, and fragrant aroma. The soils and climate of the country are ideal for growing coffee. The processing is carried out with care: it’s not an exaggeration to say that every coffee bean receives individual attention. The mild, popular and flavorsome Arabica beans form the base for this delicious coffee.

This coffee is often described as having chocolatey undertones, with a sweet aroma. It ships in canisters of 8.8 ounces. The Hacienda Alto Grande is known worldwide: it’s even found favor in the Vatican and European Royal Courts, resulting in its description as the coffee of “Popes and Kings”.

All You Need To Know About Cafe Alto Grande Puerto Rico

This altogrande coffee has been produced at the Hacienda Alto Grande since the 1830s. Each coffee bean is prepared with loving care. This is one of a very small number of Super Premium Coffees in the world, in both its regular and decaffeinated varieties.

It comes in ground form, so any traditional coffee maker will produce gorgeous beverages. Try it in a French press for an especially delicious brew. Following hurricanes that devastated the island, the flavor of the coffee produced has changed somewhat, but it remains delicious and robust with low levels of bitterness

This finely ground medium roast coffee will produce especially good beverages with around 1 to 1.5 tablespoons per 6 to 8 ounces of water.

The Expert Opinions

While it’s not (yet) as popular or easy to obtain as coffee from some other parts of the world, coffee connoisseurs know that coffee from Puerto Rico has a subtle, delicious taste and aroma all its own. There are numerous accounts online of first-time visitors to the country literally falling head-over-heels in love with this gorgeous drink.

The coffee’s fine grind means just about any traditional coffee maker will allow you to whip up a fragrant, fulfilling beverage to help get your day off to a great start. Even when finely ground, which can sometimes result in a rather too robust cup of coffee, this coffee remains low in acidity and mellow in taste.

Coffee snobs praise its lack of bitterness and its bold initial taste with subtle undertones and a glorious synergy of flavors that typically include chocolate.

Alternatives To Alto Grande Coffee

While we love Alto Grande coffee, it’s only fair to consider a few alternatives. So what other similar options are there?

Cafe Yaucono

Well, you could also think about Café Yaucono.  This ground coffee from Puerto Rico has a balanced, smooth flavor, is low in acidity, and is one of the most popular brews in the country. It’s full-bodied and bold without bitterness. It’s very finely ground, resulting in a very strong brew.

It ships in two 14 ounce bags and is known for its freshness. The flavor and viscosity can be affected by weather and climate, but since it’s been around since 1896, there’s over a century of expertise behind it. While it makes a gorgeously flavorsome brew in a Keurig or regular drip coffee maker, it brews especially well in a moka pot. It would make a particularly nice present for a coffee connoisseur.
